Learning to Dance While You Cry

This is the view at the restaurant called Istioploikos somewhere near Athens, Greece. It is also where a friend took me for coffee and a chat. We both needed a good cup of coffee and a pretty view that day. I didn't know it at the time but it would be the beginning of a new series of work I'm going to title - Learning to Dance While You Cry. I'm not sure exactly what will come out of me at this point, but I know the creative journey has begun. The next few blog posts will be about this creative journey. As I process my thoughts into ideas, editing, and finally artworks.

The basic concept started from moving away from my home country, family, friends, and all that I knew and making the bold move to my husbands native country of Greece. I will be reflecting on the hardships, joys, how I have adapted, and even the chances to my perspective of life. Some of it will be sad, some will be playful, and some will just be reflection (maybe a place to ponder). I will also be exploring the art of installations and putting my old woodworking and masonry skills to work for art instead of home construction. Don't worry, I'll never give up painting. There are going to be paintings included in this body of work along with the installations. It's just that somethings are better expressed in different mediums.

Why would I want to do this project?

I have changed, grown and I want to continue to do that. Not with just myself but with my art as well. The world seems to need some kindness and love right now. My art has never be about myself. It has always been about others and what I can give them. Sometimes it's a place of beauty to rest the soul, or I help them capture a moment in time, and sometimes it's to let them know that they are not the only ones who feel a certain way. That is my intentions with Learning to Dance While You Cry. To give back, on an intimate level, to the viewer. To say, when things are hard, it's still a beautiful life. You just need to look.

I hope you join me on my creative journey. Please share with me the times that you had something hard to deal with, how you got through, or if there was something good that came out of the hardship. After all this project is not about me (I'm just the conduit), but us.
