Dream Big
September 2022
acrylic on canvas
18 x 24 in
Don’t let you size keep you from reaching your dreams.
The symbolism in this piece broken down:
The small dog – the determined person.
The stilts– how they are going to level the playing field.
The Paintings – the standard of admiration.
Personal note: It was the bigger than life spirit of my own little white dog, Bella, that inspired this painting. I did not know that 9 months later she would pass away. The original is not available for sale and I'm waiting for it to be delivered with the rest of my belongings.

The Gilded Cage
September 2021
acrylic on canvas
60 x 25 in
Layered symbolism that expresses the age-old tale of freedom vs wealth.
A caged canary was used in the coal mines to warning the miners of toxic gases. When the canary stop singing it was because of its death. This would let the miners know that they immediately had to leave the mines or they would soon have the same fate as the canary.
The gilded cage has been a long-used symbol of what appears to be a life of luxury but where there is no freedom. Celebrities and Royals are often subjected to this kind of life.
Wrens are known as symbols of rebirth, action, protection, and joy. The Celts viewed the wren as a free spirted clever bird. Even though they are small and fragile, they use their wits to keep themselves out of trouble.

July 2018

Now What
June 2018
acrylic on canvas
30 x 17 in
Immigration, Migration, or Colonization. What do we do when someone new shows up, and what will they do?
So, whether by choice or not, when people end up some place new, what will happen next? History has shown that sometimes the strangers are welcomed with open arms and other times they are chastised and discriminated against. Yet there are times in history that has shown us it is the new comer that is the aggressor.
I froze the moment in time just before each side makes their chose on how they are going to react to each other. Even though I used symbolism based on the European move to the Americas, it still transcends time and place. Because it sits at the heart of human nature and in truth, we are all the same regardless of our differences.
The symbolism in this piece broken down:
The Horse – Reflects on when the first Europeans landed on the shores of North America. The horse was not indigenous to the continent and was later introduced, making it the perfect animals to symbolize the newcomer.
The Deer – Since I used North America as the base, the deer represents the people who are already occupying the land. Deer is indigenous to the area.
The Boat – Is used to represent the travels the newcomers had to make in order to reach the new area.
Sidenote about the Deer and Horse;
Both are four legged, short haired, herbivores who travel in herds, making them very similar and requiring similar resources. However, they are still very different.

Oblivious
May 2018
acrylic on canvas
17 x 30 in
This piece is about distraction and not paying attention to what we really need to be focusing on.
The symbolism in this piece broken down:
The Giraffe – well that’s the person being distracted. I made sure to give this giraffe an expression that shows he’s not quite impressed with the birds.
The Birds – They are the distraction. Not all distractions are pleasurable, some are boring and some are just nonsense. I chose to use birds because they can fly above the clouds.
The Clouds – Comes from the saying having your head in the clouds, which means you are not paying attention to the things around you.
The Lion – The real issue that needs to be addressed. I choose to use a lion because they are a legitimate concern to giraffes. The smile on the lion’s face is to show that some people are pleased when we are distracted from what they are doing, and it makes things much easier for them to do the intend harm that will soon come your way.
